Big Bohemia, Last of a Generation
Vratislav died pretty much on schedule in 1094, living 2 years longer than historical Vrat. He was in the middle of conquering Lower Silesia, expanding the Bohemian kingdom eastward as planned.
His younger brother, Ota, took the throne. He invaded Anhalt and was promptly granted East Franconia – an unexpected expansion to the west. He drove northward to the Baltic, taking over Nordmark in a holy war.
Why a holy war? Because he'd gained claims on each county, but never on the duchy. FFS.
Speaking of holy wars, Ota went crusading and was the primary contributor to a crusade on Jerusalem. For reasons unclear, the crusade failed and we all went home again.
He successfully married one of his sons to a candidate for the HRE, but never quite got her as the leading candidate. Despite occasionally having 5 votes, they dwindled. But the emperor is still going strong, so no matter.
In an act of idiocy, he founded a monastic order near Prague. Idiocy because the loss of piety may have cost him his HRE voting power, and because the government style is incompatible so he had to give away the county. And because he could've founded a military order instead. One or the other it seems.
His final act was pressing a claim on the duchy of Veletia. In the family tradition, he died on campaign in 1106. His nephew Bretislav, son of Vrat, finished the job and paddled his feet in the Baltic Sea.
Bret, having less loyalty to the old order, is likely to seek independence. We'll see.
